SC to pronounce Judgment in case against Sasikala on Tuesday

Jagran English Bulletin Of The Day

Yet, within six months she got acquittal from Justice K. Kumaraswamy of the Karnatka High Court, paving the way for her to resume office.

SC maintained the previous judgement of trial court while dismissing that of High Court and announced an imprisonment of four years to Sasikala. "Majority of the AIADMK MLAs are with Chinnamma (Sasikala) and we are ready to prove our strength (in a floor test)", he told reporters here. This, in turn, implies that she can not become Chief Minister and would, therefore, have to find somebody she trusts to hold that position, assuming, of course, that her faction stays united.

Sasikala was briefly expelled from the AIADMK over allegations her family was misusing the Jayalalithaa name, but she was allowed back in after publicly distancing herself from her husband. Sasikala with her co victims will be jailed for 4 years with penalty of 10 crores each.

"This concerns the fate of Tamil Nadu, so there is no need for any haste", he added. The BJP welcomed the verdict hailing it as 'people's verdict'.

Shortly after her death, Natarajan, Amma's live-in aide for decades, assumed the leadership of AIADMK, though she has apparently no political, administrative or legislative experience.

"This is our duty and way of showing our gratitude to her (Jayalalithaa)", he said. Palanisamy is likely to meet the governor with the list of supporting MLAs and the rest of the legislature party remain locked inside a resort near Chennai. He can now hold his head high, and fight off allegations of him being a partisan towards the Centre.

Speaking to reporters from the AIADMK headquarters at Poes Garden, Sasikala said that party cadres were with her and "with Amma's (Jayalalithaa's) blessings, an AIADMK government will be in place". Tuesday's apex court ruling, therefore, is the fifth on Jayalalithaa and fourth on Sasikala, though this is the first time the Supreme Court has passed such a final order against them. Ministers bowed before her, MLAs made a beeline for her.

History, it seems, has now come full circle for Panneerselvam.

Prosecutors successfully argued that Sasikala and her mentor, former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa Jayaram had possessed "disproportionate assets" that could not possibly have been obtained with their public salaries.

VK Sasikala has been sent to jail for four years.

- A TV report states that the Governor C Vidyasagar Rao has agreed to meet E Palanisamy.
