By comparing other picks in ESPN's Tournament Challenge - a terrific proxy of how the general public is evaluating teams - with tournament projections, we can find the best value picks for each region.
Without using margin of victory as a determination, the NCAA has no idea how to compare teams from small and large conference, leading to some juicy match-ups that pure resume can't predict.
This will be Vanderbilt's second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament and 15th overall in program history. The Blue Raiders are now a No. 12 seed against Minnesota.
Middle Tennessee State pulled off the biggest shocker as a No. 15 seed previous year with a 90-81 win over Michigan State, which went into that tournament as trendy pick to win a national title. Meaning, the team with the biggest nERD deficit pulled the most surprising upset.
CBS is broadcasting 24 of the 67 games, including the national championship and Final Four.
Gonzaga is the No. 1 seed here and despite the feeling among many that they are vulnerable, they'll be playing in this tournament for a long time. SMU also takes care of the ball (17 percent turnover rate, 69th best) and doesn't foul often (460 free throws against, eighth best).
Sometimes it can be hard to make a choice due to the mascots being a little. odd, such as with Wichita State and Dayton.
Nearly every ranking system loves the Shockers.
10 Wichita State over 7 Dayton.
Picking multiple 15th-seeded teams to win? Ad spending on the NCAA Tournament has outpaced the NBA Playoffs ($1.03 billion last year) and trails only the National Football League postseason which generated $1.31 billion. Three teams (Kentucky, Villanova and Kansas) were given 8-to-1 odds and Gonzaga was given 10-to-1 odds. It's a chance for the Eagles to make a mark, and they're capable of doing it.
Xavier has been on a downslide recently, and the Musketeers almost missed the NCAA Tournament.
The VCU Rams are a team that poses a threat to pretty much anyone they face, especially in the tournament.
WEST: No. 6 Maryland (24-8) vs. Well, besides the upset teams and fan bases, of course.
This one may take some research, but it's worth it to learn trivia.
Here's where you can get those upsets out of your system.
Duke was really good. The American East champs rank 63rd in KenPom, 72nd in T-Rank and 51st in BPI. With over 8,000 mentions since sliding into the brackets on Sunday, they could be the Cinderella team.
13 Vermont over 4 Purdue.
College basketball (11 a.m. -10 p.m., CBS, TNT, TBS & TruTV): Catch the first eight teams in the NCAA Men's Tournament to punch their tickets to the Sweet Sixteen. He likes to say "Butt" without getting in trouble.
