Texas, Louisiana brace for possible flooding and tornadoes

Scattered to numerous strong to severe thunderstorms are expected.

A tornado struck Virginia Beach around 6:24 p.m. on Friday according to numerous reports relayed to the National Weather Service in Wakefield from the public and law enforcement.

The tornado watch for Central Mississippi will last through 9 areas West of Jackson. He noted that the state is in close communication with parish emergency preparedness officials, who will individually make determinations on any potential school closures.

There are several storm shelters in Alcorn County which will be open throughout Thursday.

Other shelters, at the Mosheim and DeBusk volunteer fire departments, could be activated if conditions warrant, he said. Storms should weaken while approaching Interstate 75 toward midnight -though redevelopment is possible late.

A tornado touched down in Theo in northwestern Alcorn County on Monday. This means storms should develop quickly around sunrise just south of the warm-front and will not be elevated to the south of the warm-front.
