'Only time will tell' on improving US-China trade

United States and China

During Xi's two-day trip to the southeastern USA coastal town of Palm Beach, the leaders of the world's top two economies compared notes on a wide range of topics for more than seven hours altogether and agreed to expand win-win cooperation and manage differences on the basis of mutual respect.

Ivanka Trump's two oldest children, Arabella and Joseph Kushner, performed the song and recited poetry for Xi Jinping during the leader's first meeting at President Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. The strikes were retaliation against Syrian President Bashar Assad for a chemical weapons attack against civilians caught up in his country's long civil war.

"We have 20 years of diplomacy and sanctions under our belt that has failed to stop the North Korean program", a senior intelligence official involved in the review told NBC News. This will increase the US trade deficit and reduce employment in USA manufacturing. Some $347 billion of the $502 billion trade deficit recorded by the United States past year was with China. It's unlikely Trump didn't hear a "Ca-Ching!" when he issued the order to use Tomahawks for the job.

But for some of Trump's supporters, ideological elasticity is a virtue for a president who took office with no practical foreign policy experience.

In an outcome likely to play well in China, state news agency Xinhua said that US and Chinese officials initiated new dialogue mechanisms on economic issues, as well as security and diplomatic issues, in what appeared to be a reimagining of the annual Strategic and Economic Dialogue held under President Barack Obama.

Tillerson said Trump had accepted Xi's invitation to visit China and that they also agreed to upgrade a U.S.

For China, the meeting was probably a success.

With China slated for a major transition in its political leadership as the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) convenes its 19th National Congress in late 2017, all Beijing had hoped for is a "get to know", not some embarrassing squabbling summit. Chinese experts say Washington's options in North Korea is limited. They remarked generally about "progress" in their relationship and optimism about the future.

Trump's hesitancy to punish China for its unfair trading practices as he promised to do on the campaign trail exacerbated this view, in addition to the limited response to North Korea's repeated provocations.

"And I believe lots of very potentially bad problems will be going away", he added.

"President Trump evaluated the facts, that the attacks occurred on his watch, and [as he] reflected upon prior responses or lack of responses, he came to the conclusion that we can not yet again turn away, turn a blind eye from what's happened".

"We have engaged in deeper understanding, and have built a trust", he said.

Was the first Xi-Trump summit a success for China?

Another matter that didn't come up was the bankruptcy of Westinghouse Electric Co.'s nuclear reactor business. Many blue-collar workers helped propel him to his unexpected election victory on November 8 and Trump is under pressure to deliver for them.

"This may be ambitious, but it's a big sea change in the pace of discussions", Ross said. But Stavridis said that he felt it was the "best strategy" should the forced to take military action.

Retired Adm. James Stavridis, a former North Atlantic Treaty Organisation commander, told NBC News that "decapitation is always a tempting strategy when you're faced with a highly unpredictable and highly unsafe leader".

US President Donald Trump has claimed "tremendous goodwill and friendship" was formed during his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, but issued a mixed message on trade.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer addressed reporters wondering about Trump's evolution in thought on Friday, explaining that Trump was moved by footage of Syrians, including children, dying of symptoms related to nerve agent poisoning.

But on Friday Trump showed he is willing to try a new approach to China relations.

In the wake of this Trump storm, Syria served as a diversion for Beijing from making any concrete commitments on some of the contentious issues during the summit. In an analysis, Xinhua also said Mr. Trump had ordered the strike to distance himself from Syria's backers in Moscow, to overcome accusations that he was "pro-Russia".

Iran and Russian Federation are the closest allies of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
