Churchill Downs has outperformed the S&P 500 over all these periods.
While the 143rd Run for the Roses will take place with the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, the track at Churchill Downs will first be home to 13 races on Friday, headlined by the Grade I stakes Kentucky Oaks.
There are two jockeys in this field looking to win the Derby for a fourth time: Kent Desormeaux aboard Sonneteer and Victor Espinoza on Gormley. Only two Louisiana Derby winners have won the Kentucky Derby.
"Three prior horses with one eye have raced in the Kentucky Derby", said Edwards. In both 2007 and 2013, he saddled five horses for the race.
The best prep I saw was the Davis at Tampa, in which McCraken rallied by Tapwrit (who finished second) and State of Honor held on for third.
A sloppy track can make it hard to predict how the 3-year-old colts will handle the 1 1/4-mile distance. In a 20-horse field, is a speed horse stuck in the 1-hole or a closer in post position No. 20? Those who could not bring their own horse were provided one. But after watching his performance in the Florida Derby - which, in my opinion, is the best indicator of who will find success at the Derby - Always Dreaming is ready for glory. Downgrade Always Dreaming, Hence and Gunnevera for the same reason.
Baffert, 64, the trainer of four Kentucky Derby winners including 2015 triple crown victor American Pharoah, does not have a runner this year.
Missing: Bob Baffert, the ubiquitous four-time Derby victor who trained American Pharoah, and now has the best older horse, Arrogate, will not have an entrant. Certainly the horse doesn't know about the jinx, and Motion and jockey Rajiv Maragh won't worry about it. Maragh, by the way, is another good story, having come back from serious injury, a fractured spine, suffered at Belmont Park in 2015.
McCraken probably wasn't fully fit for the Blue Grass, which was his first start in almost three months, because of a minor ankle injury that appeared after he won the Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs. These are the horses I'll be betting on when the gates spring open on Saturday. But Patch also drew post 20 for Saturday's race and while that isn't the worst draw by the historical numbers, it has been almost a decade since a horse won the Derby from that slot. "I love being the favorite".
Irish War Cry has had only one bad race and bounced back to win the Wood Memorial quite nicely.
Classic Empire figures to be a lukewarm favorite Saturday.
The Blue Grass's lack of early speed made it hard for McCraken, who characteristically slipped toward the back of the pack midway through the race, to make up ground on longshot victor Irap. But he's not a standout like American Pharoah. Again, though, highly strung horses and change. if he wins, I'll tip my cap to him. However, I have too much respect for the colt to not have a little money on him. With a clean trip, he could be unsafe. A place wager means your horse must come in first or second, while a win means just that - your pick has to come in first.
