Sport on hot streak ahead of Canelo-Chavez Jr. showdown

Las Vegas. Chavez Jr. is scheduled to fight Canelo Alvarez in a 164.5 pound catch weight boxing match Saturday in Las Vegas

"It is the animosity these two have for each other", De La Hoya said about the fighters.

Chavez Jr. has had issues in the past with making weight, but on Friday made 164 pounds fairly easily, though he did look a bit gaunt. Photo: Gayle Lynn Falkenthal. He said the steady weight cut supervised in the mountains above Mexico City by conditioning coach Angel "Memo" Heredia will aid his fight-night energy. Chavez turned in 10 uninspired rounds to lose by unanimous decision.

Chavez faced a $1 million-per-pound penalty. Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 knockouts) will meet Chavez (50-2-1, 32 KOs) on an HBO pay-per-view bout Saturday at T-Mobile Arena.

There is so much anticipation for this fight from not only the boxing community but also the Mexican-American community.

The repercussions of any repeat laziness were steep: a $1-million penalty if he weighed one-tenth of a pound over the contractually stipulated 164.5 pounds for Alvarez.

The match-up comes with inherent drama worthy of a telenovela.

Not only are they compatriots, but there is history between the two fighters' families, too.

Alvarez's dislike for Chavez Jr. stems from multiple failed drug tests throughout the years. Canelo Alvarez has pontificated about growing into the middleweight division, and yet he's content to leapfrog it as long as he isn't facing Gennady Golovkin. Alvarez is that top three fighter to those who take that into consideration and Chavez Jr.is always that skeptical and talked about question of a fighter. It all came to a head on April 18, 2015 when a clearly out of shape Chavez opted to take a Light Heavyweight fight with Andrzej Fonfara and was promptly taken apart. The event was held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena and was witnessed by a huge partisan crowd that was predominantly Mexican.

"If Canelo looks really good, there's a good chance the fight happens", Golovkin's promoter Tom Loeffler said. There is no rehydration clause.

"As a person, I don't know him well, but just from what I hear from his actions and all, it's like a guy that just doesn't sustain what he says", Alvarez said of Chavez.

Still only 26, he has already packed so much into a stellar career which has seen him become a two-weight world champion having beaten the likes of Amir Khan, Miguel Cotto, James Kirkland, Erislandy Lara, Austin Trout, Shane Mosley and Kermit Cintron. As ESPN reported, Chavez Jr. spoke about the weigh-in and how he feels. There are no titles on the line, no fancy belts. Perhaps most importantly, he hates to train. The other might as well exile himself to Southern California, at least in the near future.

Chavez Jr. did start out his career at 135, but that doesn't mean that doesn't mean anything. Canelo was fading at times in his last fight against Liam Smith after being attacked hard in the first 5 rounds. A loss for Alvarez would be a disaster for Golden Boy Boxing and Oscar De La Hoya. "We're going to have an awesome event". Yet Vegas' wiseguys have him as a heavy favorite for a reason that has been comforting for Alvarez. He is a serious and focused fighter. Chavez lacks the scientific pressure that made his father so unsafe, but he's a big boy with bizarrely good cardio for someone with his aversion to hard work. Meanwhile, Alvarez definitely won't be able to use his size to bully Chavez Jr. around the ring like he has many opponents in the past, so he'll have to get "El Hijo de La Leyenda" on the ropes and neutralize his reach advantage while relying on his own technical skills and punching power to get the victory. But what he can do is rehabilitate his poor image with a good effort.

According to sources, Golovkin and his promoter Tom Loeffler will be angling to face the victor of Canelo vs Chavez Jr.
